This year has been a huge year for the UK’s scene, we’ve seen new talent rise and old talent return, we’ve seen a new wave of music take over the streets and there hasn’t been a better time to be a UK pop music fan. In this blog I’ll be saying my top 4 UK artists from the last year (in no particular order) and some reasons to why they made the list.
In at number 1, is Ambush Buzzworld. Ambush took over the summer with his track ‘Jumpy’ and done it again with his remix boasting features from Chip and Skepta. Ambush then dropped ‘Man Can’t’ which was ever present throughout the winter months. Jumpy, Jumpy remix, Man Can’t and All We Know (Ambush x Asco remix) gave Ambush a combined 11.7 million streams on Spotify and with over 10 million views on Youtube this year, it is safe to say that Ambush Buzzworl has had a pretty good year.
Jorja Smith comes in at number 2. Jorja has seen huge success this year with the release of her debut album Lost & Found. L&F rose all the way to number 1 in the OCC UK Independent & R&B Albums charts which speaks volumes about the quality of her music. She managed to reach over 23 million views on her colours show on Youtube which was only released in April this year. Jorja’s talent doesn’t only excite the UK Audience but is drawing attention from across the world. Spotify says her monthly listeners is up at 4.7 million and that is sure to only rise as she releases more music.
Bugzy Malone makes the 10 after what was a huge year for him. If you’re a UK rap fan you’ll know of Bugzy Malone, the talented northerner burst onto the scene and made a few enemies early in his music careers but he seems to have settled everything now and is making some awesome music. We all knew about Bugzy’s talent from his Fire in the Booth freestyle which racked up over 18 million views on Youtube, but this year he took his music to the next level releasing his Album B. Inspired, which peaked at number 5 in the OCC UK Album charts. The grime superstar even managed to get his song ‘Ordinary People’ on the tracklist for the famous video game, Fifa 19.
Love or hate Ella Mai she is one of our own and that is why she makes the list because it would be crazy to leave her out. The London born singer/songwriter dropped the R&B anthems of the year with ‘Boo’d Up’ and ‘Trip’. She took her music abroad to the US where it blew up quickly and her fan base has taken a steady rise ever since. Currently at over 7 million monthly listeners on Spotify, it is safe to say that she’s enjoyed a massive year, releasing her self-entitled album ‘Ella Mai’ with features from John Legend, H.E.R and Chris Brown as well as featuring on Meek Mill’s album.
When writing this I felt like 4 was just not enough so here are a few honourable mentions of UK Urban artists who have had an awesome year:
