Universal Music have recently released their new digital Platform “Spinnup”. Just from the name itself we can tell, this platform is going to be out of control!
This platform is for aspiring artists and songwriters looking to get distributed and discovered, basically suggesting that it’s for unsigned artists. Spinnup offers global distribution and has a network of scouts that have a direct line into Universal Music. This instillment enables a direct connection between artists and A&R at Universal Music. This means that creatives will get professional feedback and distribution.
There is also one more advantage that makes Spinnup stand out from the rest…”From 10am November 21 – 11.59pm December 31, all single releases on Spinnup UK are free!”
Even with these advantages, there is a downside to the product.
“You grant to us, and our sub-contractors all necessary consents and rights including, without limitation, under the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 (‘Act’) and any amendment or re-enactment thereof, to enable us to make the fullest possible use of the Recordings (including without limitation the right to collect all income deriving from the Recordings distributed by us) in accordance with the provisions of this Contract including without limitation any and all consents required under Part II of the Act. For the avoidance of doubt, you will maintain ownership of your copyright at all times. You hereby grant us a non-exclusive, irrevocable and transferable licence to use and distribute the Recordings for these purposes.”
This means that even if you cancel your subscription, they can still sell your music. This is probably just a safety measure from their side but just in case your song blows up, this might be an issue.
This has been said before, but only time will tell if this platform will be a success, all we can do now is…wait.
