It’s that time of year again! BBC Music has released their list of the next generation of artists highlighted for Sound of 2018.
At it’s 16th year, 16 emerging artists have made it on the list, selected by a panel of 173 music experts including critics, broadcasters and DJs, with the top five shortlisted and announced by BBC Music in January, with the official winner revealed on the 12th.
But for the first time in Sound Of history, the deciding panel included some former nominees including Stormzy, Years and Years’ Olly Alexander, Ellie Goulding and last year’s winner Ray BLK.
Surprisingly, where grime and UK rap has become hugely popular and commercial within the last couple years, as apparent in last year’s Sound Of list, this years’ selection has swung back to pop with the youngest artist on the list, 15 year old Billie Eilish, Scandipop artists Sigrid and Alma, as well as piano balladeer, Lewis Caoaldi.
We are definitely excited for this year’s longlist and see such a range of emerging artists continuing their career jouney in 2018.
Speaking of this years’ choices, BBC Radio 1’s Annie Mac said “Some acts will be brand new to UK audiences and many have already started to make an impact.”
