Skepta, arguably the grime scenes God Father, dropped his highly anticipated album ‘Ignorance is Bliss’ on Friday(31/5). Having spent my weekend listening to it I think I can come up with a fair review.
I’m not a hardcore grime fan but when Skepta dropped the album I had to give it a listen specially after he drip-fed us tunes before its initial release. After listening to ‘Bullet from a gun’ before the album came out I was going into the album excited. It did not disappoint. Skepta’s flow and punchlines throughout the album make it very clear as to why he’s so highly acclaimed in the industry. It was easy to listen to the album from beginning to end and I did so multiple times.
There are quite a few songs that I enjoyed listening to but there definitely were 5 that stood out to me and that will be included in my personal playlist. Bullet from a Gun, What do you mean?, Same Old Story, Love Me Not and Glow in the Dark are my top 5 songs(in no particular order). In ‘What do you mean?’, Skepta links up with one of the UK’s hottest artists J Hus to give you old school, smooth vibes and a vast collection of punch lines. It’s definitely my favourite on the album.
So after 48hours exclusively listening to the album I can come to a fair conclusion and give it a fair rating. My album rating for Ignorance is Bliss is 8.5/10. Because I’m not a hardcore grime fan I cannot judge it from that perspective but as a body of work and judging it as a music enthusiast, in general, it deserves the 8.5. A great album but not perfect.
Until the next one.
