Predicting artists that are going to have a good year is probably the hardest part of my job but I’ve managed to pick a group of artists that I can honestly say I believe in and I can’t wait to see what they produce this year.
There is no doubt that Octavian would make my list, I think he’s made everybody else’s lists and with very good reason. Winner of the BBC Sounds of 2019 award, the French Born, London based rapper, went from strength to strength in 2018 and he’s only going up. His mixtape blew up and his single ‘Lightning’ was included in the tracklist for FIFA 19! To think a few years ago he was penniless, at 14 he was homeless and now he’s the name on everyone’s lips. I can’t wait to see what Octavian can bring to the UK rap scene in 2019.
Kicking off 2019 with nominations for the Critics’ Award at the BRITs 2019 and BBC Sound of 2019, Mahalia’s talent is undoubted. After releasing her EP ‘Seasons’ which saw a lot of success last year, it’s only fair to assume 2019 will be bigger and better for the singer/songwriter from the midlands. Almost 3 years since her last Album, Mahalia is going to be someone to expect from this year and her fans are in for a treat if her recent music is anything to go by. With hits ‘I Wish I Missed My Ex’, ‘Surprise Me’ and ‘One Night Only’ receiving a lot of love last year, she’ll only be looking to level up this year.
Number 1 in the official charts with a real rap song, only the 3rd song to debut at #1 in 2018 and no album or mixtape released. Last year Fredo only gave us a preview of what’s to come this year. His distinguishable flow and high quality visuals make him a fan favourite in the UK. What we do know is that his debut Album entitled ‘Third Avenue’ will be landing on the 1st of February with 13 tracks and features from Dave and Lil Dotz. He’s more than just a harrods shopper, he’s a fire music dropper and 2019 is the year we stand up and take notice.
Compared to many artists that have come before her, Hamzaa’s distinct and special voice cannot be missed. You can’t predict how far she could go in the future but 2019 is going to be a huge year for Hamzaa as she looks to follow up from her hit single ‘Breathing’. After stunning audiences with her performances in 2018, it’s hard to bet against her going huge. This year is just the beginning and that is why Hamzaa is One to Watch this year.
Hailing from Manchester, Aitch is a young and talented rapper with a unique flow and style. Coming up from instagram freestyles, it was only a matter of time before his talent was recognised. 2018 was a steady breakthrough year for Aitch, racking in over 10 million views on youtube and over 6 million streams on spotify. Some may argue he made a name for himself last year but, what’s next for Aitch? At the moment we don’t know but 2 weeks into the new years and he has already released a single entitled ‘Wait’ which has reached over 400,000 views on youtube in a short space of time. Rap fans, this is certainly somebody you should keep your eyes on this year.
Come back next week to find out who else made the list!
