International Women’s Day 2021 Part 2

As you may already know it was International Women’s Day, on Monday 8th March 2021. Where we celebrate the accomplishments of women and those who identify as women everywhere. Being a young woman in the industry, I think it is especially important for young people to have other women in the industry to look up to. Having that representation as a young person allows you to think and dream big as seeing other people who look like you are achieving great things will motivate and inspire you to do the same.

In a male-dominated industry, women in music are underrepresented and underpaid compared to their male counterparts, with 21.7% being artists, 12.3% being songwriters and only 2.1% being producers with research taken from Billboard’s annual Hot 100 charts from 2012 to 2018. With these stats, it can be discouraging to young women wanting to pursue a career within the music industry. However, this hasn’t stopped us, and many women have decided to take the power back by starting their own labels for women by women. In the UK we are fortunate enough to have platforms such as ‘GRL GNG, ‘FemaleTakeover,’ `Bossy LDN’ to name a few who ensure that women are given the same opportunities and are being promoted which I love.

Growing up I was fortunate enough to have an older sister who I was able to look up to when it came to music and working hard, without having my sister to look up to I never would have found my passion for music and I believe that every young lady should have someone that inspires them.
