1Xtra has always broken boundaries, created their own world and pushed all their listeners to the edge.
A true reflection of black Britain.
When 1Xtra first launched in 2002, it was dominated by US rap and R&B. At that time grime was still being developed underground. Once Lethal Bizzle’s legendary POW was released, 1Xtra had music it could claim as its own under the genre of Grime.
1Xtra is a station that is full of community, controversial thoughts and opinions. It is a station that truly reflects Britain through the use of music. Because 1xtra continues to push boundaries, they are very stable with a current listenership of over 1 million a week.
1Xtra is known for helping artists on their development and continues to plug black-music within the UK. The radio station has a show called “Fire in the Booth” ran by Charlie Sloth. This show allows MC’s to perform freestyles over an instrumental. It has also boosted many careers such as Wretch 32, Bugzy Malone, Chip and many others.
1Xtra has definitely set a standard and model that other radio stations should adapt. They don’t only speak on diversity but they always enact it using their playlist and choice of shows.
1Xtra truly reflects the culture of Britain.
