Lady Leshurr bounced her way through a flood of lyrics. She spits like a machine gun sometimes, but never seems too short of breath to cover the entire stage and give eye contact to the front 3 rows.

Simians Ghost; atmospheric, synth poppy soundscapes, but there were still songs in there, still listenable. Would love to hear some what some pared down harder remixes would to the sound, but great for summer.

MUSIC TO OUR EARS

 Music doesn’t just happen – it takes time, dedication, effort and money. That song on the radio needed people to create it, write the words and music, learn and play instruments to make it sound great, record the performances, and beg someone to play it on the radio. That’s how everyone starts – begging for attention. Many never make it. Even if they have entered X-Factor! What you hear is the result of a lot of effort by many people – some in the foreground, some invisible. Many songwriters licence their songs to music publishers for a small percentage because they are normally better at getting their songs used on radio and television or in advertisements, films  or used in discos and clubs. Of course, if a record is sold (or downloaded) they get a small royalty payment for that too. Most recording artists licence their recordings to record companies for the same reasons –record companies can do better promoting their records to the public. Most Artists have managers – organising venues, sorting the transport to get the musicians and their instruments to the performance or “gig”, agreeing merchandising like t-shirts or badges – an amazing number of manufacturers and jobs all benefitting from the music that started it all.

So we have music publishers and record companies begging for attention on behalf of the songwriters and artists! Each time anyone plays, listens or uses a recording of a song in public, the song writer and/or recording artist is entitled to a (quite small!) payment.

Music Publishers, Record Companies, Managers, all investing their time, money and effort to support and promote songwriters, Artists and everyone associated with the production of great British music.

Some of the royalties that all these people earn are hard to monitor by individuals so collection societies like PRS and PPL do if for them. It would be really hard if the BBC, for example, had to ask permission every time they wanted to play a record or broadcast a live performance. So there are blanket agreements with broadcasters giving them the right to play whatever they want, whenever they like then tell the collection societies what they had played,paying a yearly “blanket” fee.

It takes many, many, sales, streams or performances to generate enough for a songwriter to just earn the minimum wage – millions of hits on You Tube or streams on Spotify, for example.

So, why is copyright important? We only have to think of everyone who benefits from the creation of successful music, and the UK is one of the most successful countries in the world at producing it.

As long as there is good protection to safeguard the rights of the creators – then we are also protecting many manufacturing and service industries – T-shirt companies, (with the band’s logo!), concert halls (hundreds of supporting jobs), Radio and Television, apart from “just” playing music, the BBC are making vast sums from licensing the music based “Strictly Come Dancing” format around the world. The list of those generating profits and earning wages from activities where it all started with the music is endless. The UK proudly produces most of the World’s most successful music and iconic bands and artists – Queen, Pink Floyd, Adele, Coldplay – we are truly supplying the world with the best of British and bringing in vast revenues to this country

Oh – and let’s remember where the music  starts – that’ll be the songwriter then – please let’s not forget them!
